The Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives of Ghana (UPNMG) has held a regional durbar in the Upper East Region to address critical challenges affecting its members, with a focus on improving their professional, economic, and social well-being.
The event, held at the In-Service Training Centre in Bolgatanga, provided a platform for union leadership to engage members on working conditions, workplace conduct, staff welfare and client relations.
Discussions also addressed concerns about inappropriate workplace behavior and negative attitudes toward patients.
The durbar was held under the theme: “Delivering Critical Healthcare Amid Security Crises and Acute Shortage of Nurses and Midwives: The Role of Stakeholders.” It brought together members from various districts, health officials and UPNMG leadership.
Chairperson of the occasion, Damata Bukari, described the durbar as a landmark event in the union’s journey. She emphasized the need for unity and collaboration, noting that healthcare challenges in the region cannot be resolved by health workers alone. She called on government, traditional authorities and community leaders to support nurses and midwives to ensure quality healthcare delivery.
Bukari also urged union members to remain professional, resilient and innovative, describing their dedication as the backbone of healthcare delivery in the Upper East Region.
Deputy Regional Director of Human Resource for Health, Kelvin Tengekyebe, commended the union for convening the durbar. He acknowledged the crucial role nurses and midwives play, particularly in underserved and insecure communities.
He assured participants that the Ghana Health Service remains committed to collaborating with UPNMG and other stakeholders to address staffing shortages, improve resource allocation, and strengthen security measures where necessary.
The regional leadership of UPNMG said the durbar reinforces the union’s commitment to advocacy, partnership, and advancing healthcare delivery while improving the welfare of its members within the Trade Union Congress (TUC) framework.
