Authorities in the Bolgatanga Municipality say the proposed 24-hour market project at the Tanzui, Zorbisi and Sokabisi enclave is expected to expand business opportunities and stimulate economic activity in the Upper East Regional capital.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony on Friday, May 8, 2026, Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive Roland Atanga Ayoo described the project as a strategic intervention under the government’s 24-hour economy agenda aimed at boosting productivity and creating jobs.

According to him, the modern market facility will serve as a commercial hub where agricultural, financial and trading activities can continue beyond the limitations of the traditional market system.

“This is a market that will boost productivity. It will ensure that commercial, agricultural and financial trading goes on without stopping,” Mr. Ayoo said.

“It is going to stimulate economic growth and create the needed employment opportunities for our growing youth population.”

The project forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s flagship 24-hour economy initiative, which government officials say is intended to drive industrialisation, support businesses and reduce unemployment through continuous economic activity.

Authorities believe the facility could significantly reshape trading patterns in Bolgatanga, where the main traditional market operates on a three-day cycle.

“It is true that we have a traditional market, but it comes only every three days. This new market is going to augment that system and open up Bolgatanga in a completely new way,” the MCE stated.

The facility is expected to include lockable shops, warehouses, market stalls, a police station, fire service post, pharmacy, cold store, crèche and a Women’s Bank.

Construction firm Grumah Twins Company Limited has been awarded the contract for the project, which is expected to be completed within 36 months.

Mr. Ayoo urged contractors and consultants to ensure quality delivery and adherence to timelines.

“I want to urge the consultants and contractors to do due diligence to ensure that this project meets the expectations of the people,” he said.

He also called for local participation in the execution of the project, urging contractors to prioritise local labour and businesses during construction.

“We should not leave out local content in the construction of this market. Our people must also benefit and make a living from this project,” he added.
