The President of the Upper East Regional branch of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Anthony Namoo, has called for greater unity among political leaders, traditional authorities, civil society organizations and citizens to accelerate development in the region.
Speaking on A1 Radio’s DayBreak Upper East show, Mr Namoo said the Upper East Region must adopt a more coordinated approach to advocacy and development, similar to what many perceive to be the practice in the neighbouring Upper West Region.
“There is a general view that Upper West has moved far ahead of us in terms of development. Whether that perception is entirely accurate or not, one thing people often point to is their ability to unite and speak with one voice on issues that affect the region,” he stated.
According to him, the region’s development agenda should transcend partisan politics, with stakeholders focusing on projects that will improve the lives of residents.
He cited the Bawku–Pulmakom Road project as an example of what can be achieved through collective advocacy. He recalled that leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the region engaged the Presidency to secure support for the project, which later received funding assistance from international partners.
Mr Namoo also raised concerns about critical infrastructure, particularly the aging Pwalugu Bridge, warning that it requires urgent attention.
“This is our home. If that bridge develops serious structural problems or collapses, the consequences for transportation and economic activities in the region will be severe. We must all put our shoulders to the wheel and advocate for projects that are important to our people,” he said.
He noted that development should be seen as a shared responsibility and urged influential personalities from the region to leverage their positions to champion the region’s needs.
The legal practitioner emphasized that while political differences are inevitable, leaders and citizens must unite around issues of regional development to ensure the Upper East Region receives the infrastructure and investments necessary for growth and prosperity.
