TikTok content creators in Ghana’s Upper East Region are calling on government authorities and cultural institutions to partner with them to promote Ghanaian traditions, local languages and cultural practices to global audiences.

The appeal was made during the “Buuri Malema Sanga” programme on Bolga FM, where creators discussed the growing role of TikTok in cultural education and youth empowerment.

Participants said the platform has moved beyond entertainment into a space where young people showcase traditional dances, local foods, music and indigenous languages, helping to preserve and project the cultural heritage of the Upper East Region and Ghana more broadly.

“TikTok has become a powerful tool for cultural education, tourism promotion, entertainment, and youth empowerment,” the creators said during the programme.

They called on government agencies, cultural institutions and media organisations to collaborate with TikTok users through training, sponsorship and digital empowerment initiatives, arguing that such support would improve content quality and expand the reach of Ghanaian cultural content online.

The creators also encouraged young people to use social media responsibly by producing educational and culturally rich content that adds value to society.

Participants in the discussion included Emmanuel Nyaaba Akurugo, Richard Awuni, Lawrence Akaluty, Abane Atindanbire and Desmond Abugre.

The discussion highlighted the growing influence of digital platforms in cultural preservation and their role in creating new opportunities for young people in Ghana’s creative economy.
