Residents of Kolgo Adayelum, a sub-community under Sumbrungu in the Bolgatanga Central Municipality of the Upper East Region, have appealed to government authorities and development partners to urgently repair their only borehole, which has been out of service since January this year.
Speaking to Bolga FM reporter Moses Anaba Azubire, a member of the community, Mrs. Aponya Atanga, described the situation as extremely challenging, stating that residents are struggling daily to access clean water for household use.
According to her, the breakdown of the borehole has affected every aspect of life in the community, including the welfare of school children who depend on the facility for water before and after school hours.
“We are facing serious difficulties because there is no reliable source of water for our daily activities. Our children are suffering, and we are appealing to the authorities to help us repair the borehole,” she said.
Another resident, Simon Nyaaba, revealed that the borehole developed a fault in January 2026. He explained that the community had reported the issue to the Assembly Member and other local leaders, but despite several follow-ups, no concrete action has been taken to restore the facility.
Mr. Nyaaba noted that the water crisis has affected both humans and animals in the community. He said livestock owners are struggling to find water for their animals, while school children are unable to access water for bathing and other basic sanitation needs before attending classes.
“The entire community is suffering. Children cannot get water to bathe before going to school, animals are struggling to get water, and households are finding it difficult to carry out their daily activities,” he lamented.
The residents further disclosed that community members have already mobilised and contributed thousands of Ghana cedis towards the repair of the borehole, demonstrating their commitment to solving the problem. However, they indicated that the amount raised is insufficient to fully restore the facility.
The community is therefore calling on the Municipal Chief Executive, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, the Upper East Regional Minister, as well as non-governmental organisations and philanthropists, to come to their aid.
Residents say access to clean and safe water is a basic necessity and are hopeful that the authorities will respond swiftly to alleviate the hardship facing the people of Kolgo Adayelum.
