Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited (CNML) has donated sports kits and equipment to six schools in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region to support football activities.
The beneficiary schools, Biung, Buugu, Datoko, Digaare, Sheaga and Tolla, received football jerseys, footballs, pumps, boots, socks and kit bags during a presentation ceremony held at the Cardinal Namdini Mine on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.
Vice President and Director of Investment at CNML, Xiao Vincent Sun, said the intervention reflects the company’s commitment to supporting the development of children through education and sports.
“At CNML, we firmly believe that education and sports are complementary pillars in shaping well-rounded young people. Education equips them with knowledge and skills, while sports foster discipline, teamwork, leadership, resilience and a healthy lifestyle,” he said.
Mr. Sun added that the donation was aimed at supporting basic schools in the area, describing it as an investment in the future of children and a demonstration of the company’s commitment to education.
The Talensi District Chief Executive, John Millim Nabwomya, underscored the importance of sports development in promoting discipline, confidence, teamwork and leadership among pupils.
“Sports is an integral part of education. It promotes physical fitness, discipline, teamwork, leadership, resilience and self-confidence,” he said.
He noted that the donation was a significant investment in the health and overall development of the children, adding that it would encourage active participation in sports and help identify and nurture young talents.
The DCE urged the beneficiary schools to make good use of the equipment and expressed appreciation to CNML for supporting development initiatives in the district.
A beneficiary headteacher, Mahammudu Ayariga, who is also the Assembly Member for the Datoko Electoral Area and Headteacher of Tolla Presbyterian Basic School, described the donation as timely, saying it would help address challenges schools face in accessing sports materials.
“This is a right donation at the right time. Look at the individual schools. We struggle with football; we struggle with how to get jerseys. But this is something that is coming to boost our sporting activities, especially football,” he said.
Mr. Ayariga explained that obtaining jerseys for sporting competitions has been a major challenge for schools in the area.
“Even to get jerseys to play sporting competitions is always a problem. No school will run to any place to beg for jerseys to play a football match with a different school. No headteacher or sports teacher will be running helter-skelter to see how they will organize and even buy jerseys again,” he added.
He commended CNML for its continued engagement with schools in the district, citing previous support including the provision of sanitary pads, science books and assistance for sporting activities.
