The government will not contract a new loan to complete the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom Road, Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza has said, indicating that the project will instead be financed with domestic tax revenue.
Mr. Agbodza said the government considers the road a priority and is committed to ensuring contractors receive timely payments to prevent funding-related delays.
“We are not going to take any loan to complete this project. We will use the taxes paid by Ghanaians to fund it because this road is a priority for the government,” he said.
The Minister made the comments during an unannounced inspection of ongoing works on the road in Bolgatanga on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
During the inspection, Mr. Agbodza said President John Dramani Mahama’s administration would prioritise prompt payments to contractors working on the project to enable them to meet their construction schedules.
“From now onwards, we will be visiting contractors unexpectedly to inspect the work they are doing. President Mahama will make sure contractors are paid on time so there will be no excuse for delays, and this road will be completed on schedule,” Mr. Agbodza said.
He said the Ministry would also conduct unannounced inspections of contractors working on major road projects across the country as part of efforts to monitor progress and ensure work is being carried out as expected.
Mr. Agbodza described the Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom Road as a strategic transport corridor linking Bolgatanga and Bawku and connecting the Upper East Region to Ghana’s eastern border areas.
“This road is very important to me and to President Mahama. It connects Bolgatanga to Bawku and the eastern corridor. If you are travelling from Tema to Bolgatanga, this route is critical for movement, trade and economic development,” he said.
The Bolgatanga–Bawku–Pulmakom Road has been under construction for several years, with delays in its completion generating concerns among residents and road users.
