Paramount chief of Nakong traditional area in Kassena-Nankana West district, Pe Joseph Afagache has vowed to mobilize residents of the area to put an end of illegal logging of rosewoods in the forest.

According to him, discussions have started with neighboring chiefs in the district to sensitized community members on the need to protect the forest.

Kasena Nankan West as well as Builsa North, Builsa South, Talensi, Nabdam and Bawku west districts respectively lately witnessed the activities of illegal logging of rosewood despite its ban.

The forestry commission recently gave an approval for about 25 companies to salvage already logged rosewoods in forests in Upper East, Upper West, Northern and Brong Ahafo regions.

But Upper West regional coordinating council on its part in a letter dated 30th August 2017 disapproved the grant permit.

However, Upper East regional forestry commission on the other hand granted permit to the companies to salvage rosewoods in forests of the region.

But speaking exclusively with A1radioonline.com, Pe Afagache decried the devastating effects of logging on the environment.

“All the rivers and water bodies are drying because some individuals are cutting down the trees”

According to Pe Afagache, although there are no existent logged rosewoods, the companies have taken advantage of the grant permit “to manage and fell them [rosewoods] and carry away”.

According to him activities of the companies depletes the forests. While pledging to end illegal logging in his area, Pe Afagache stated “we are going violently to protest against” illegal logging.
