The plight of residents of Dua-Yikene and Apuwongo communities in the Bongo district of Upper East Region in accessing potable drinking water worsens as the dry season sets in.

Residents of these two communities resort to drinking from unsafe water from two rivers, the Nayire and Yorogo River all in the Bongo district. Livestock belonging to residents of these communities also compete with their owners daily at the river banks for water.

When A1radioonline caught up with the assembly member of the area, Atinga Daniel, he said the situation worsens especially the dry season when the rivers dry up due to no rains.

“Now that we are getting to the end of the year, it is somehow better, but getting to the middle of next year, March and April where the rivers dry up, then people find it difficult getting water to drink”Mr Atinga lamented.

The tragic situation according to the assemblyman pressured residents whom without option resort daily to drink from the unsafe water while others also walk for the long distance to nearby communities to queue for water.

Mr Atinga stated that although the water challenge in his electoral area has been brought to the notice of the Bongo District Assembly, efforts to get the communities with portable drinking water have not been me.
