The Member of Parliament for the Talensi Constituency, B. T. Baba has said the outbreak of Meningitis in the various Senior High schools in the Upper East region is owed to the implementation of the Free SHS policy.

According to him, meningitis, since its outbreak in the region has not affected people outside the confines of the various campuses of the schools; an indication that the overcrowding in the various High Schools in the country due to the poor implementation of the Free SHS is the cause.

He said while in an interview with a1radioonline.com’s Joshua Asaah that “Why should it be only in the schools, it means that the schools are overcrowded conditions. Because most of the schools are enrolling more than they could have done in the past and that is also creating accommodation problem and classroom congestion”.

Three students of Bawku Senior High Technical, Tempane SHS and Zuarungu SHS have died since the outbreak of meningitis hit the Upper East region. Several other students have also been admitted in various health facilities in the region.

There have been reports of its outbreak in the Northern region where a student of the Damango Senior High School was reported dead.

Eastern region also recorded one death in the Koforidua Senior High Technical School.
