The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo has assented to five key Bills passed by parliament last year.

The bills include The Zongo Development Fund Bill, The Special Prosecutor Bill and the National Development Authority Bills which will champion the governing party’s campaign promise of disbursing $1 million to every constituency.

The President Assenting the National Development Authority Bill will pave way for the creation of the Coastal, Middle Belt and Northern Development Authorities, the latter of which replaces the controversial Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA).

The Office of Special Prosecutor is in fulfilment of the NPP’s campaign promise in the run up to election 2016.

The Bill defined the modalities for the appointment and operations of the Special Prosecutor, which will have the mandate to investigate and prosecute cases of alleged corruption under the Public Procurement Act 203 Act 63 and other corruption-related offences implicating public officers, political office holders and their accomplices in the public sector programme (IPEP), which is expected to receive an annual allocation of $275 million.

The Zongo Development Fund Bill sought to establish the legal framework for the implementation of the Zongo Development Fund another campaign promise of Nana Akufo-Addo during the 2016 campaign leading up to elections.

$50 million dollars was allocated to the Fund in the 2017 budget and Education has been noted as a priority area of the fund, with the stocking of libraries, rehabilitation of schools in the Zongos and empowering Arabic instructors being some of the expected interventions.
