Most Tomatoes farmer at Tono Irrigation project in the Kasaena Nankana Municipality of the Upper East region have pulled out of Tomatoes farming.

The development is due to lack of ready market for their produces as tomato buyers from the Southern part of the country continue to ignore tomatoes produced in Ghana for tomatoes produced in neighboring Burkina Faso.

Speaking to A1 Radio on the station’s News Analysis Programme, Reporters Visit, Focal Person for the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana, Ahmed Bogobire said most of the farmers are moving to producing pepper.

According to him, farmers had a fall out with the market women after they failed to pay back their monies to them after they had bought their tomatoes on credit.

He said when the market queens were approached on why they failed to pay their monies, they established contact with the people of Burkina Faso and since then, they purchase tomatoes from Burkina Faso.

He indicated that the prices of tomatoes in Ghana has skyrocketed because most farmers have moved into pepper farming.
