Former Deputy Interior Minister under the John Dramani Mahama administration, James Agalga has said the implementation of government’s most talked about policy, Free SHS is not only challenging but disastrous.

According to him, he does not understand why parents of first-year students in Senior High Schools still look for support from Members of Parliament to pay their wards fees when the policy seeks to reduce poverty by paying for all fees of their wards.

He indicated that the challenges that greeted the policy are miserably affecting the delivery of quality of education in the country. He said the governing New Patriotic Party cannot ride on the Free SHS policy considering how disastrous its implementation has been.

James Agalga who was speaking to A1 Radio indicated that the policy was implemented in a haste and that there should have been piloting before the implementation in order to avert the various problems the policy is currently facing.

“I continue to support students with my share of the common fund so sometimes it amazes me when people talk about Free SHS so I say it is not appropriate to talk about Free SHS now because we need an elaborate time to spell out the shortfalls in the policy. We all know how disastrous the implementation of the Free SHS has been.  So instead of working on addressing the challenges, you are listing that as an achievement? Shocking!”.

“We thought that the implementation of the policy was in a haste. We should have taken pains to do a pilot of the programme. Now the policy is challenged and that has affected the quality of education in the country.”
