US-based Accounting Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare has said in his opinion, Former President John Mahama is better off remaining a statesman than running for the highest office of the land again.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has officially announced his decision to stage a comeback and lead the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2020 elections.

The former President at one of the Unity Walks recently, promised to announce his decision at the opportune time following incessant calls from members of the party who were pressing upon him to come back and lead the party.

In a post on his official Facebook page on Saturday sighted by MyNewsGH.com, Mr Mahama who lost to current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said:

“I want to congratulate the rank & file and executives of our party, the NDC, at all levels for the commitment and work rate we have put into our reorganization efforts”, he said.

“The zeal and determination of the average sympathizer of our great party is greater and miles ahead of what it was after the December 2016 Elections.” He added, encouraging the party, “We need to keep up with the momentum generated and follow the published timelines.”

He said he has listened to the teeming supporters of the NDC who are calling on him to lead them, adding that he will not disappoint the NDC.

“To you the teeming supporters and sympathizers calling and requesting me to declare my intentions for the future, I wish to assure you today, that as a servant-leader, I have listened to your calls and reflected. I will not disappoint you even as we await the publication of the party’s guidelines for selecting a new leader”.

But Prof Stephen Asare, popularly known as Prof Azar has a non-binding advice for the former President:

“I firmly believe that people should be free to run for any office. However, if ex President John Dramani Mahama asked me for advice on whether to run for office in 2020, I will urge him not to on grounds that he has already served the country in various capacities, including as MP, Minister, VP and President and he should now use his cumulative knowledge and experience to write a book and to serve as a statesman.

Please note that this is free, unsolicited and non-professional advice that is not binding on the ex President or anyone else.” He wrote.

As usual, he ended his advice with his signature “Da Yie!”.
