Construction of dams under government flagship program ‘One Village, One Dam” has taken off in the Bongo district of Upper East Region.

Bongo district is the first in the region to get its share of the policy and it is getting 8 dams out of expected 40 dams to be built within 4 years.

It will be recalled that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 electioneering promised to construct dams in all communities in the Northern, Upper East and West regions for an all year round farming.

In line with this promise District Chief Executive for Bongo, Peter Ayinbisa has handed over sites for the construction of dams in 8 separate communities within the district.

Mr. Ayinbisa commended government for fulfilling yet another campaign promise stating “I am highly impressed with the performance of this government because this is a government that promises and fulfills its promises”

He added that the construction of the dams will allay fears of many especially opposition NDC “who thought the government was joking and lying” to Ghanaians.

The DCE said the dams when fully completed will go a long way “to eliminate if not reduce poverty in the district”

Mr. Ayinbisa said funding for the project is drawn from the 1 million dollar per constituency.

Works for the 8 dams is expected to start in the next two weeks and covers for a period of four months for completion and will be executed by Abooh 1 Company.

Engineer for the project Douglas Twum was optimistic that all the 8 dams will be ready and handed over within the stipulated period.

“We have enough equipment and machines to start two sites at the same time. Per our calculations, we can work within the time given. When they did the technical evaluations, they saw that our capacity is very high that we can construct about 8 dams within 4 months” he stated.

Some community members who spoke with A1 News said the dams when fully constructed will curb urban migration of the community members to Southern Ghana in search for non-existent jobs.

The beneficiary communities include Anafobisi-Apusareka, Atampiisi-Kuyelgo, Dua-Yikene, Soe-Kabre, Ayoopia, Sambolgo, Zorko-Kudorigo and Awaa.
