The District Chief Executive of Bongo in the Upper East Region, Peter Ayinbisa last Friday broke grounds for the construction of a dam at Kuyelingo. This marked the commencement of eight dams in that district under the 1-Village 1-Dam Policy by the government.

Speaking to the media after the ground breaking ceremony, the DCE said what critics of the government claimed was a mere political gimmick had proven that the Nana Addo-led government is on course and will deliver on its promises.

“It got to a point that some people thought that it was not going to be possible. They thought it was usual; campaign promise but today, the Bongo people are getting to realise that the promise the President made is coming to fruition, is coming to live and I’m happy that all of us have assembled here this morning to cut sob for the commencement of the construction of dams in the Bongo district.”  He said.

According to Mr. Ayinbisa, in all, 15 communities have been identified but out of the number, eight communities have been approved and in due course, the rest would also be approved this year.

He explained that: “These in technical terms, are dugouts. They are not going to be that dam that you expect like Vea dam, like the Tono dam. These are going to be standadised dugouts that can be used for irrigation purposes. If you go to areas like Fumbiisi or Sandema, these are the types they want. They don’t want that big dam, they want the smaller ones so that everybody will be able to have small portion of land that you can irrigate and that is what we are doing.”

He stressed that the dams will have the capacity for irrigation purposes, domestic chores, construction of houses and for animals to drink.

Mr. Ayinbisa was optimistic that Abooh 1 Company, the contractor working on the dams has the capacity to execute the contract. He told newsmen the contractor has four months to undertake and hand over the dams to the district assembly.

Engineer of Abooh 1 Company, Dauglas Twum, assured the DCE and the people of the district that they will ensure quality of work even as they work to ensure they meet the timeline of four months.

The Paramount Chief of Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Atamale Lemyaruum, said though individual land owners in localities where the dams will be built may have issues with land, he assured he will ensure such issues are addressed so as they do not impede the construction of the dams.
