The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, has said her outfit has adopted a new strategy to encourage beneficiaries of their loans to venture into farming to provide major food stock for schools and institutions across the country.

She disclosed this when she paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Daniel Syme during a working visit to the region to acquaint herself with how the scheme was fairing.

Mrs Attionu explained that when the strategies are put in place, it would create ready market for the MASLOC beneficiaries and at the same time encourage the schools and institutions to consume locally produced foods. She stated that so far the Scheme had disbursed about GH¢2,600,000 to 6,200 people made up of 5,700 women and 500 men and stressed that the support had contributed significantly to improve livelihoods of beneficiaries.

The MASLOC CEO mentioned that some of the beneficiaries were engaged in food production, agro-processing, livestock farming, micro enterprise and Schools Feeding Programme while others went into other vocations.

She further stated that the Centre would embark on value chain approach to create more employment for the youth and cited for instance that people would be supported to go into rice farming and milling while different groups would do the marketing and transportation of the produce.

Mrs. Attionu appealed to the beneficiaries to endeavour to repay their loans for others to also benefit and impressed upon the loan recovery officers to double their efforts in retrieving the loans.

Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, Daniel Syme has called on MASLOC to put priority on the three regions of the north in the disbursement of Loans.

Mr Syme said it was evident that the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions were the most stricken by poverty in the country and therefore ought to be given priority in the disbursement of loans.

He expressed concern about the late disbursement of loans in tranches and said it was not helpful for the beneficiaries particularly the women groups who venture into farming with these loans.
