Soldiers disrupt anti-Bukari group from jubilating over his reshuffle

The main commercial street of Bolgatanga, the capital of the Upper East Region was last Friday turned into a ‘ghost’ street when soldiers took over the Barclays Bank-GCB Bank stretch of the road after they disrupted a planned route match in jubilation of the reshuffle of Upper East Regional Minister, Rockson Ayine Bukari.

Last Thursday, President Akufo-Addo announced his first ministerial reshuffle in which Ghana’s Ambassador to Italy, Paulina Patience Tangoba Abayage was reassigned as Upper East Regional Minister-designate.

When the news broke, a well-known member of the governing New Patriotic Party Alhajo Nuhu Mahama Akalbila, Friday afternoon mobilised some NPP youth to embark of a float through the main streets of Bolgatanga to jubilate over the reshuffle of the minister and also to thank the president for removing him from the region.

Coincidently, Alhaji Nuhu is the elder brother of Adam Mahama Akalbila, the late Upper East Regional Chairman of the NPP. He died from an acid attack on him in May 2015.

After the Nuhu-led group had gathered at his base near the Ghana Post Office to embark on the float, news got to them that an opposing group loyal to the regional minister had also gathered at the St. John’s Park to disrupt their intended float.

After members and their leader, Alhaji Nuhu had drummed and danced in their prescribed white attire, signifying happiness, and were about to address the press, a team of armed soldiers who also wielded canes, arrived at the venue in the vehicle and dispersed them.

Alhaji Nuhu, sensing danger, bolted alongside his members. Journalists who had gone to cover the street side news briefing, had to also take cover. They ran helter-scatter only to return later and find their motorbikes pushed into gutters by the uniformed officers. Passers-by, shop owners and their customers around the tensed area had to all take cover as the soldiers chased and whipped anyone on sight.

A1 NEWS later gathered that the action of the soldiers was to avert a possible clash between groups.

Hours before this incident, the outgoing regional minister, Mr. Ayine Bukari, while addressing heads of second cycle institutions at the conference hall of the Regional Coordinating Council in Bolgatanga, said he was aware some elements jubilated when he was reshuffled but unknown to them; his reshuffle was a promotion and not a demotion.

He said: As I’m going there [Presidency], that is the powerhouse. That is where I can work harder for this region because I am now at the centre, in charge of special duties.”

In May last year, Mr. Ayine Bukari caused the arrest of Alhaji Nuhu after a misunderstanding ensued between the two at Gambibgo near Bolgatanga where they had both attended a funeral.

Since then, they two have not been in good terms and so it was not surprising Alhaji Nuhu mobilised his boys to jubilate over the reshuffle of Mr. Ayine Bukari.
