The repercussion of the coronavirus pandemic in the country is adversely having a negative impact on the ordinary Ghanaian as prices of foodstuffs are increasing almost every day due to the restriction of movement to control the spread of the virus. This has a tendency of worsening the poverty level of the vulnerable in society.

It is against this backdrop that Afrikids Ghana, a child rights Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) working in northern Ghana has supported 150 children with cerebral palsy and their families in the Bongo District of the Upper East region.

The beneficiaries are from Vea, Dua and Feo communities where Afrikids Ghana is rolling out a project to end abuses meted out to children with special needs.

Country Director of Afrikids Ghana, Nicholas Kumah who presented assorted food items and soap to the Bongo District Health Directorate in Vea said children with special needs are the most affected persons in the era of the coronavirus, the purpose of the donation.

“We are particularly in the Bongo district working with children with cerebral palsy and this time of Covid 19, we think that, this are the category of children who are the most vulnerable and critically in need”, he stated.

Among the items donated include, 40 bags of millet, 10 boxes of key soap, 10 boxes of Geisha soap and 9 boxes of Carbolic soap.

Bongo District Health Director, Stephen Bordotsiah thanked Afrikids Ghana for the timely support to the vulnerable children and their families. Mr. Bordotsiah pledged to ensure the items get to the families.

“This has come timely around a time when we are preaching about social distancing and so, people’s movement has been limited. This will help the beneficiary families to be able to support them in this critical time of covid 19”, he said.

Children born with various forms of deformity in the Upper East Region were labeled as ‘spirit’ children and killed by concoction men.

This act was carried out in perceived to safe parents of these children from being killed by the supposed spirits.

This led to the introduction of a project by Afrikids Ghana, known as ‘the Spirit Child Phenomenon’ to change the perception of the public against children with disabilities.

Administrator of the project, Mathew Abagna said the practice of killing disabled children in Bongo district is coming to a total end due to series of sensitization activities.

“We have identified the traditional healers, those who performed the act. We have educated them to accept that what they were doing was against the rights of the children and against the constitution of the country. Now, the traditional healers are declaring an end and banning the practice in their communities.  We have not heard again of a child being killed in the district”, Mr. Abagna indicated.

Elizabeth Agonga, on behalf of mothers of the beneficiary children, thanked Afrikids Ghana for the relief items. The foodstuff and the detergent was valued at Ghc 10,250.00.
