Afrikids Ghana, through its Dynamic Approach to School Improvement (DASI) project has donated 400 desks to the Ghana Education Service in the Upper East Region. The metal fabricated dual desks are intended to be distributed to 20 schools across the Nabdam, Bongo, Builsa North and Builsa South districts.

The donation was in line with the DASI project’s aim of addressing issues that impede academic performance and also contribute to a poor learning environment in 80 rural schools in the 4 districts of the Upper East Region.

The leead Project Manager of DASI, Cletus Anaaya said the donation of the furniture forms part of an assessment carried out by the project and the Ghana Education Service which realized an acute shortage of furniture in schools in the region.

“Recently, we partnered with GES to do a block monitoring of our schools and during this exercise, we realized that the problem of furniture in our schools is a big problem. So, we got back and thought that we will do something small to support GES to help solve the furniture problem”, Mr. Anaaya indicated.

To help in the fight against the deadly Coronavirus, the DASI project in addition to the desks provided Veronica buckets and hand washing soap to each of the entire 80 beneficiary schools under the project districts.

“We are therefore using this opportunity to inform our school children, their parents and the general community to continue to observe the WHO protocols of washing of hands constantly under running water and soap so as to stay alive”, Mr. Anaaya admonished.

DASI is a 3-year project funded by the Department For International Development (DFID) with a goal to improve student proficiency in basic schools in the 4 districts through increased access to inclusive, equitable and quality basic education in the region.

Country Director of Afrikids Ghana, Nicholas Kumah thanked its funding partners, managers of the project, the GES and the media for the role played in a smooth implementation of the project since its inception in 2018.

“And we are calling on other well-meaning NGOs and individuals to emulate this and also come to the aid of our schools”, he said.

Bongo District Director of Education, Madison Amokase Anane received the gesture on behalf of the other beneficiary directors who couldn’t attend the short handing over ceremony due to the suspension of public gatherings as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr. Anane thanked Afrikids Ghana and its donors for the support, saying the furniture will go a long way to improve teaching and learning in the schools.

“I am so happy that Afrikids has single out to assist GES with furniture. These will argument our furniture situation, improve upon the quality of teaching and learning. Our children will now have places to sit and pay attention to lessons”, he said.

He pledged to ensure proper supervision of the furniture donated. The total cost of the metal desks and the Veronica buckets and soap costs sixty-eight thousand Ghana cedis (GHC68, 000.00).
