Following the gruesome murder of a Tricycle rider by an unknown man at the Sherigu community,a suburb of the Upper East Region capital,Bolgatanga ,Tricycle operators have put in place personal security measures to protect themselves against any attack.

The measures, according to them will not only ensure their safety but will turn them into watchdogs in the areas they operate.

A Tricycle rider was reportedly murdered and dumped at a refuse dump at Sherigu. Investigations have since been launched by security services in the region into the case with an identified suspect on the police wanted list who is on the run.

Speaking to A1 News in an interview,Public Relations Officer of the Tricycle Operators at the Main Station in Bolgatanga, Christopher Agana explained that the incident has created fear and panic among his members.

“Looking at how the incident occurred, it tells that the two were already doing business together and the trust was there also, but human beings are unpredictable. Now, what we are telling our colleagues is they should always be two if someone comes to take ‘dropping’. Again, they should always inform at least four of their friends as to where they are taking a passenger to”, he said.

Mr. Agana added that part of the measures will be to meet with owners of the tricycles on how they can reduce the daily sales in order to reduce the fatigue their members go through.

“Sometimes our members will be forced to go to the extreme to meet the daily required his master might have requested from him. Some master will demand that a rider will have to make a daily contribution of at least Ghc 40.00 and as well as buy fuel of about Ghc 30.00 and then pay himself of Ghc 30.00. These are part of the reasons riders will go that extra mile and at the end may fall on the wrong hands like happened to our brother.”

He, however, appealed to the security agencies in the region to beef up their search for the suspected killer to face prosecution.
