Gambibgo-Azuabisi Community in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region where school girls end up being school dropouts has been connected to the national grid.

In the past, these residents have lived in darkness for over 20 years since the Gambibgo community was first hooked to the national grid.

The situation has caused so many economic and social setbacks in that community such that ,school children had to study under lanterns in this 21st Century regardless of the health hazards.

School girls have reportedly gotten pregnant due to lack of parental control.

These girls are said to always use the search for electricity to learn in nearby communities as an excuse to abscond to their boyfriends who end up impregnating them.

The disastrous situation has even led to the Member of Parliament for the area, Dr. Dominic Ayine promising of solving the challenge to no avail.

Hopes of the residents were therefore dashed and in a state of despair until the District Chief Executive, Prof. Emmanuel Abole made frantic efforts to connect the community to the national grid.

According to these residents, “When there was no electricity here, in fact this part of the community was like hell. So most of our youth, during the night will move to areas that have light to enjoy social life. It was difficult controlling them and most of our girls were getting pregnant. Now that the light is here, it will serve as a tool to control our children”, a parent, John Adongo told A1 News.

The residents, whom some are basket weavers said the provision of electricity to the community will help improve their economic situation to propel a sustained livelihood.

“Almost all basket dealers comes here to buy baskets but the challenge affecting the basket production here was electricity. So we are happy that the honorable DCE is here to power the community for us to continue our basket business”, assembly member for Gambibgo electoral area, Mahamadu Bukari Agongo said.

But Prof. Emmanuel Abugre Abole said ,the provision of the electricity to the area was in fulfilment of a campaign promise he made to the people of Gambibgo-Azuabisi during the 2016 elections period.

“Upon my assumption [as DCE], less than 3 months old on the seat, I wrote a proposal to the Ministry of Energy, requesting them to connect 22 of my communities without electricity to the national grid and this is one of the areas. The others, because of a shortage of materials which fortunately is on the way, will be fast track and sooner than later, the whole area will be lit.” He said.

Rev. Abole who doubles the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Bolgatanga East Constituency, seized the opportunity to sensitize the community members on the Covid-19 pandemic and also donated some nose mask to the residents of the area.

Meanwhile, aside the provision of electricity to deprived communities, a major ongoing projects which aims at opening the District is the construction of the Gambibgo road linking the Bolga-Tamale highway.
