The 2016 Parliamentary Candidate of the People’s National Convention (PNC) in the Bolgatanga Central of the Upper East Region, Thomas Akurugu has defected to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mr. Akurugu who had a total votes of 7, 431 in the 2016 Parliamentary election has crossed carpet to the NDC with over 200 supporters from the PNC; in what is said to be an agenda to wrestle power for the Flagbearer of the NDC John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming December 7 election.

Speaking to the media on Saturday 31st October 2020 at a ceremony to announce his move, Mr. Akurugu said “Aside from the NDC, there is no other political party in the region that could boost of beating me in the parliamentary race in Bolgatanga Central. So, I saw the need that if I cannot beat the NDC, I have to join it to rescue Ghanaians from the mess that the NPP government has caused every single one of us.”

He continued that “in 2017, I had my membership card but thought it wise that I have to make it public so that my supporters will know that we are no longer members of the PNC rather the NDC and must vote to chase out the elephant.”

According to him, one of the reasons that influenced his decision to defect to the NDC was the ample cases of alleged corruption activities being witnessed under the current NPP government.

He called on members of the NDC especially the executives, to henceforth see him as their own and open-up on their challenges, and how they could collectively work to overcome those challenges; for ultimate victory in the December general elections.

Receiving Mr. Akurugu to the party, Upper East Regional Secretary of the NDC,  Donatus Akamugri Atanga, called on the party executives to rally behind the party as well as Mr. Akurugu to bring back Former President John Dramani Mahama to power in 2021.

Meanwhile, some of the supporters of the former PNC parliamentary candidate who spoke to the media indicated that they will make sure they work hard to support the NDC; and will campaign the same way they would have done for their candidate (Mr. Akurugu).
