The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana, Upper East Regional branch, has called on government to review the One Village One Dam (1V1D) policy to adequately meet the demands of farmers.

Prior to the 2016 elections, the current government as part of its campaign messages pledged to construct a dam in each village in the five regions of the north to promote all year farming; and upon assumption of power, a number of dams were earmarked to be constructed.

However, the association has observed that despite the policy’s tendency of boosting agriculture in Northern Ghana, implementation has been poor.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East, Focal Person for the Peasant Farmers Association in the Upper East Region, Rev. John Akaribo, stated that farmers at the announcement of the 1V1D policy expressed hope that it would help address their water challenges and enable them practice all year-round farming; however, most of the dams constructed have not adequately met the expectations of the farmers.

He therefore called for a review in the implementation of the 1V1D policy to effectively address the concerns of the farmers.

Touching further on challenges confronting members of the association, Rev. Akaribo raised concerns over recent reports of attempts by parliament to  pass the Plant Breeders’ Bill, now Plant Varieties Bill.

Stating their disapproval of the move, he questioned the rationale behind the passage of the bill and stated that the move does not favor local farmers in Ghana.
