The Minority Spokesperson on Security, James Agaliga has alleged that the Electoral Commission (EC) has a lot to hide from the Ghanaians; the reason for not appearing before parliament on Thursday.

Officials from the EC were earlier scheduled to brief Members of Parliament (MPs) on preparations towards the elections.

The EC could not show up but with an excuse from the Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, that the invitation to the EC to come before the House got to the EC officials very late.

Subsequently, the EC expressed its readiness to meet with Parliament on Saturday, November 7.

But confirming media reports of anger expressed by some MPs over the incident, on A1 Radio, James Agalga, stated that the action of the EC boss indicates that “She has a lot to hide that is why she is running away from the national assembly.”

“First of all we need to know the status of the register. Remember that parliamentarians and presidential candidates actually filed their nominations with a provisional register. That has never been done; it is not done anywhere. So we wanted to know the status of the register and then also the status of the biometric verification devices; how many have been procured; the state in which they are. These are very nagging concerns begging for response.” He explained.

According to Mr Agalga who is the MP for Builsa South Constituency, “She {Jean Mensa} knows she hasn’t gotten her acts right and therefore when she appeared before the House it was going to be a tag of war; that is why she’s running away from the House.”

Supporting the call by the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, for the EC boss to be cited for contempt of parliament over her inability to appear before the House, Mr. Agalga observed that “This is not the first time; she (Jean Mensa) has shown a lot of contempt and disrespect to parliament. We think that the time has come to call off the bluff of Jean Mensa.”
