District Chief Executive for Bolgatanga East, Rev. Emmanuel Abugre Abole, has urged farmers to ignore critics of government’s policy intervention One Village One Dam (1V1D), and rather focus on using the dams constructed to venture into dry season farming to end poverty.

According to him dry season farming is possible and can help end poverty; the reason government has invested a lot of resources into the flagship policy ‘One Village One Dam’.

Prior to the 2016 elections, the then opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), as part of its campaign messages pledged that it will construct dams in each of the villages in the five regions of the north to promote all year farming; and upon assumption of power, several dams were constructed.

After 3 years of its implementation, there have been loud criticisms of the 1V1D policy with many critics reportedly suggesting that the constructed dams could not be useful for their intended purposes.

But addressing farmers at the 36th National Farmers’ Day celebration held in Zonno in the Bolgatanga East District of the Upper East Region, Rev. Abole said the district was blessed to have completed five dams that were capable of assisting farmers in their dry season activities.

“These completed dams situated in Kantia, Dubila, Kumbosigo, Asonge, and Gonno will not only help dry season activities, but our livestock will not stretch for long distance for water. So, I want to encourage you, farmers, to use the dams especially in your dry season activities while we look for other means to complete the rest.” He stated.

Rev. Abole who is also the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Bolga East constituency in the impending December polls, used the ceremony to caution residents to commit to total peace and eschew all acts of violence as the country heads to the electioneering period.

Overwhelmed by the farmers’ commitment to work in the midst of COVID-19, the District Director of Agriculture, Henry Ayamga called on them to focus more on technological farming to minimize labor-intensive.

Mbabila Atisga was adjusted the District Best Farmer and was awarded a Motor King tricycle, two bags of fertilizer, A radio set, a knapsack sprayer, two bars of soap, and a certificate.
