The Upper East Regional Deputy Communication Office of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Johnson Ayine, has downplayed the impact of an ongoing campaign tour of the Upper East Region by flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.

The two-day visit, according to NDC’s Regional Secretary in an earlier interview, seeks to hold several community engagements as part of efforts to maintain touch with supporters of the party in the region ahead of this year’s polls.

But Mr. Ayine described the move by the opposition party as rather too late and untimely.

According to him, NDC has taken the people of the region for granted; stating that former President Mahama should have visited the region months ago; and not come just two weeks to the general elections.

In his view, Mr. Mahama’s visit at this time was wrong and cannot bring the needed impact the opposition party seeks to achieve.

The NPP communicator who spoke on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East program, said the long held consideration that the Upper East Region is loyal to the NDC ceases to be; because according to him, residents of the region could now testify which political party has them at heart.

He continued that “Things have changed, those days are over; per the kind of massive development undertaken by the NPP, I can say with vim that the NDC has lost it all. The NDC has failed us in terms of development. For 8yrs what legacy can the party pinpoint to us.”

He further stated that the continuous dominance of NDC in the region has made the party complacent; thereby presenting the NPP with an opportunity of springing a surprise in the coming election.

Responding to the claims made by the NPP communicator, Upper East Regional Communication Team Member of the NDC, Isaac Ayemvoa, noted that his party has consistently won elections over the NPP in the region; and that NPP was not in the position to advise them {NDC} on the timing for their campaign activities in the region.

According to Mr. Ayemvoa, the timing of the visit to the region by Mr. Mahama was right and will help revitalize the party and its supporters for victory come December 7.

Mr. Mahama as part of his two-day campaign tour is expected to visit constituencies in the eastern, central and western parts of the Upper east Region.
