The Upper East Regional Police Command has classified one third of polling stations in the region as flashpoints ahead of the December general elections.

Analyzing the figures given, it could be interpreted that over 400 polling stations in the region have been identified as flashpoints.

The Upper East Regional Deputy Police Commander, DCOP Alexander Amenyor, made this known in Bolgatanga on Thursday, during his address at the climax of a peace march embarked on by Security Services in the region, together with the National Ambulance Service and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).

He noted that the high number of flashpoints identified in the region calls for worry; but was quick to add that the security services shall give extra vigilance to those identified flashpoints to prevent any form of violence in the impending elections.

“If you look at the Upper East, we have over 1400 polling stations. Unfortunately, we have classified about a third of it as flash points. This is a course for us to worry. However, every polling station will have to get at least one person” to ensure and maintain peace. He said.

DCOP Amenyor admonished the security personnel to be professional and discipline as they prepare towards the elections.

On his part, Upper East Regional Commander of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Osei Kwaku Ampofo –Doku, expressed the commitment of all security agencies in the region to ensure and maintain peace before, during and after the elections.

According to him, security personnel have been deployed to be stationed during voting and counting hours at all the polling stations that have been identified as flashpoints.

He continued that “We are prepared; once we know there are flashpoints, we have put maximum security in place to ensure it doesn’t prevent us from discharging our duties.”

“We are going to ensure that the zeal that we have exhibited here today will be carried throughout the election period and even after. So that we will continue to see one Ghana in its peaceful state as we came to meet it. The polling stations are already known. The EC has released its polling stations. Ours is to make sure that each polling station is policed; that’s what we are doing.”
