The Upper East Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, George Asante Wiafe, has urged Ghanaians to observe fire safety protocols especially, in this harmattan season.

According to him, the increasing reported cases of fire outbreak in the country can either be partially attributed to improper electricity wiring of buildings of the use of substandard electrical materials.

Mr. Wiafe spoke in an interview on A1 radio’s Daybreak Upper East program.

“What accounts for that is the cables we use; the materials we use, wiring appliances; you know now there are a lot of counterfeit gadgets in town and some of the gadgets we use are not the appropriate ones. Some of us use 1.5 when they are operating and others, instead of going for the 2.5mm.”

“We have most quack electricians in town and we don’t use the correct electricians. It is appropriate whenever you want to wire your place; you get an electrician who has a certificate to show so that you are assured of quality work done. But what is killing us most is the way we use our electricity. We overload our extension electrical circuits.” He said.

Mr. Wiafe further touched on the need for hunters to be meticulous when burning the bush in search of their games, especially as the festive season approaches and the harmattan season intensifies.

He advised the hunters to always set up fire belts before burning; so as to prevent the outbreak of fire.

He also admonished cigarette smokers to observe safety fire protocols during smoking.
