Principal of the Colleges of Languages at the University of Education Winneba (UEW), Prof. Ephraim Avea Nsoh, has recounted how his name mysteriously disappeared from the admission list of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), many years ago.

He described as worrying the stress he went through to enter the university to pursue his first degree.

Revisiting the story many years after on A1 Radio, Prof. Avea said “I went and saw my name on the list. I remember my name was number 22 on the list. The next time I went back to get the admission, I never got it. They told me my name wasn’t there; but I saw it myself earlier. I wish there were cameras at the time; I would have snapped a photo of it.”

“I was taken to meet somebody who worked at KNUST at the time; and after I told him the story of how my name was captured in the admission list and later disappeared, he said ‘okay’. Am sure he understood what was happening there.”

According to Prof. Avea, he later decided to check at the University of Ghana, Legon, where he had as well applied for admission; and there, he found his name but not without what could be described as a drama.

“I got money and travelled to Legon, to the Great Hall and started going through the admission list and I saw my name. As soon as I saw my name, I didn’t even waste any more time. I was so happy and started running away. Then I felt that I needed to go back and look at the list a 2nd time. So I walked back to go and be sure that my name was actually captured. So I came home, prepared and went back to start.” He recounted.

Having gone through all the stress to be admitted into the University of Ghana, Prof. Avea said he did not bother about what programme he was asked to study; narrating that “When I got there, I didn’t care whether it was anthropology, linguistics, maths or science. I didn’t care. I’ve struggled enough and am in the university.”

According to him, he eventually opted to study Linguistics and French for his Bachelor of Arts; and subsequently pursued further studies till he earned his current PhD and MA in Linguistics.

Prof. Avea is one of 3 senior staff of the University of Education Winneba, who were sacked from their positions and later reinstated after they were accused of insubordination, misconduct and breach of internal regulations.

He was onetime Upper West Regional Minister; prior to heading the Upper East Region, under the Mills-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
