A Development Economist and Lecturer at the University for Development Studies -Tamale, Dr. Michael Adongo has called on the government to devise other means of combating the spread of Covid-19, as another lockdown will add Ghana to the list of highly distressed countries.

According to him, the wake of Covid-19 has brought about untold hardship on many Ghanaians, as well as a negative impact on the economy, and these will further worsen if the government thinks of another lockdown.

It could be recalled that the Information Minister-designate, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah during a press briefing on Monday, January 25, 2021, said the country may be heading for tighter restrictions and a possible lockdown should the Covid-19 cases continue to rise.

Dr. Adongo who spoke on A1 Radio however believes that another lockdown will be an unwise decision as it will have untold economic implications on the already weak economy.

“I will advise that government should not be thinking of lockdown, because it will further worsen the economy. The wake of the virus has brought serious damage to the economy and even the partial lockdown we had some months ago did not help the economy. So, talking of lockdown will not be a wise decision.”

Touching on steps that will help in combating the virus rather than a lockdown, the Development Economist suggested that government should rather put strict measures that will limit the movement of people, especially at funerals.

He said: “Strict measures should be implemented to limit the number of people that go to funerals as well as other social gatherings.”
