The Upper East Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, ASP David Fianko-Okyere has disclosed to A1 News that, police officers in the region have started the enforcement of face masks wearing at public places.

This exercise is in line with President Akufo-Addo’s directive to the Inspector General of Police, James Oppong Boanuh, to ensure that officers of the Ghana Police Service enforce the wearing of face masks in public places.

Some two weeks ago, (on January 17, 2021) President Akufo-Addo in a broadcast of his 22nd update on measures the government has put in place to fight Covid-19, announced that the non-compliance of the face mask-wearing has contributed significantly to the increase in Covid-19 cases in Ghana and to ensure compliance, he has directed the I.G.P to get his officers to enforce the rule.

In an interview on Monday, February 1, 2021, ASP David Fianko-Okyere said the police allowed some grace period for sensitization of the people of the region on the need to wear the face mask in public places and also give people some time to buy the face mask.

“As I said, immediately the directive was given we set out to sensitize the people, because whatever you do there some people who will remain adamant. I can assure you that we are going to start the enforcement; the education has gone and we expect people to comply. So, from now arrests will be done.”

According to him, the personnel of the MTTU of the Ghana Police Service have been asked to check buses and if anyone is found without a face mask, the person will be arrested.
