400 vulnerable widows and orphans in the Upper East region were supported with foodstuff by the Widows and Orphans Movement (WOM).

The gesture according to the Project Officer at the Widows and Orphans Movement, Patricia Ayichuru became necessary due to the economic challenges associated with the coronavirus pandemic.

“At the peak of COVID-19, we realized that the women were challenged in so many ways, especially, economically. Food prices had increased and even movement to market places was also limited and this made it difficult for the most vulnerable women. That is why we supported the women as part of our contribution to supporting livelihoods in the era of the pandemic.”

According to the Project Officer of WOM, the Non-Profit Organization which is focus on helping to alleviate the plight of widows and orphans in Northern Ghana had its support from Oxfam.

The beneficiaries, were from the Nabdam, Bongo and Talensi districts as well as the Bolgatanga municipality. The vulnerable widows and orphans including persons with disabilities, received each, 2 liters of cooking oil, 10 kilograms of rice and nose mask.

Atampoka Akura, a widow from the Amanga community in the Bongo district who was full of joy, thanked WOM and Oxfam for the support.

Another widow from the Gundork community in the Nabdam district, Gifty Mogre in an interview with A1 NEWS, while recalling how the restrictive measure affected her wellbeing, thanked the Widows and Orphans Movement and Oxfam “for getting us this foodstuff to keep us alive in the era of the pandemic”.

Ms. Ayichuru revealed that Oxfam had also supported her outfit to assist the Nabdam district to prepare an emergency preparedness plan.

“This was because, with the unset of COVID-19, a lot of organizations and individuals had it difficult to adjust because we did not really have any plans in place for emergencies or disasters. The Nabdam district out several other districts which were contacted, showed interest and we supported the assembly”, she stated.
