Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region, Johnson Ayine, is advocating for the need to adequately equip rural hospitals across Ghana so as to attract and retain medical doctors in rural communities.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Daybreak Upper East program, Mr. Ayine expressed worry over the refusal of most medical doctors to accept postings to rural communities due to the very deprived nature of the hospitals in those areas.

“We have to make sure that the way we equip korle-bu and Okomfo Anokye hospitals, let us also equip the various regional hospitals like that. So there can be no excuses that there are no machines in rural hospitals and if you go there, your colleagues in Korle-bu and other areas will advance ahead of you.All things that will make sure that the various regional hospitals are well equipped and up to standard that can attract and retain medical doctors should be done.” He said.

Citing a suggestion by the Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr. Nsiah-Asare, to decentralize the recruitment of medical doctors, the NPP communicator believes implementing such a move will ensure a fair distribution of doctors across the country,

“About 82 percent of medical doctors in the Ghanaian health system are centered in Accra and Kumasi to the detriment of the majority in other parts of the country. This is something that is affecting us seriously.” He lamented.
