Businessman and Council of State aspirant in the Upper East Region, Yaw Mort has pleaded with the delegates in the Friday, February 12, Council of State election to consider the interest of the region and not just personalities.
According to him, what the Upper East Region needs is not just people of high social status and qualifications or money, rather the region needs people who are committed to the development and welfare of the region and the communities to represent them at the Council of State and all other national positions.
“I have been here; working with many people at various levels. I am a businessman who lives and moves around with people of different classes and so I know what they go through and what they need from the government and other duty bearers, to be able to live decent lives and also progress in their economic activities. If I am voted to represent the Upper East Region at the Council of State, people of the region will see action.”
Yaw Mort spoke in an interview with a1radioonline.com on his preparation for the election to be held at the meeting hall of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs from 10:00 am.
“I will be a Council of State member you can call on and also approach with communal requests as well as issues that affect the region and requires the president’s attention. In some years past, Council of State members were seen and heard helping to address developmental gaps in some communities in the region. An example is the late Rev. Dr. Ayeebo who was connecting people from the region to employment opportunities even at the national level. We haven’t had this in the Upper East region for some time now, and this is the spirit and commitment I want to revive in the region.”
Yaw Mort said he has spoken to the delegates and shared his vision and the plans he has for the region should he be voted to represent the region.
“I am a young man; I am between the old and the young. The Upper East Region will not regret having me to represent the people of this region to advise the President about the region.
No one should be deceived that the Council of State only advises the president on national issues. Council of State members have the responsibility to advise the president about issues in their region and even communities. Once you have direct access to the president, you have the opportunity to table the pressing needs of your people before him. This is what I intend to do; I will not be there for myself and my personal interest.
In my personal capacity as a private businessman, I have employed many people who are supporting their families. I have helped people to start their own businesses. I live with the people at the grassroots as well as people in the upper classes of society, I know what we all need and expect from someone who has access to the president and can tell him the problems and challenges at first hand.
Meanwhile, 30 people made up of two from each of the 15 districts and municipalities in the Upper East Region.
Before today, Thursday, February 11, 2021, there had been press conferences over the selection of the two representatives from the districts.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) claims that the procedure in the selection of the delegates was illegal and unlawful, while the New Patriotic Party on the other hand saw nothing wrong with the selection done and rather blamed the NDC for politicizing every action of this government, since their flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama lost the 2020 Presidential Election.
