Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba has criticised what he described as the silence of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on the refusal of the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, to take the witness box in the ongoing election petition.
Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Amaliba expressed dissatisfaction over the ‘selective conduct’ of CSOs in the country, especially on issues relative to the two main political parties.
He said “Suppose in the 2012 Election Petition, Afari Gyan {the then Chairman of the EC} had said that he wasn’t going to take the witness box. Do you think this country would have been quite like it is now? Why is it that when it’s another person’s turn, civil society is quiet, churches are quiet, and mosques are quiet. What is wrong in this country?”
Refuting assertions that CSOs have failed to comment on the matter for fear of committing contempt of court, Mr. Amaliba asked them to simply add their voices in calling out Mrs. Mensa to enter the witness box as such calls do not amount to contempt of court.
“When you say Jean Mensa, take the witness box; because the people of this country want to know how you discharged your duties as EC Chair; how is that contemptuous of the court?” He wondered.
