An Educationist, Nii Ardey Armah has said that Ghanaians should subject the argument of ‘Dreadlocks wearing’ in schools to situational analysis background. He said such students may have genuine cultural and religious implications of wearing dreadlocks rather than fashion.
In his view, the consideration can be given to such students but should not be generalized since it can result to ‘a new normal’ trend of lifestyle in various schools.
Speaking on ‘DayBreak Upper East’ programme on A1 Radio, he said, “I want to stick to situational analysis so that the case is taken with each peculiarity rather than generalizing it. If you generalize it, then you open the gate for anybody who sees the dreadlocks as fashion to also do it. So some of these things should be carefully considered.”
His comments come on the back of two students who were reported to have been denied admission by the authorities of Achimota Senior High School after been posted to the school by the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).
Though the Ghana Education Service (GES) has subsequently ordered the School Authorities to admit these students with dreadlocks.
However, Mr. Armah said that Ghana’s laws are so clear on admission into schools irrespective of religion, ethnicity, race and gender, therefore no one can deny someone who is a fetish priest an admission but their activities must be conformed to the dictates of the school.
