On Monday a group of four armed robbers on two motorbikes attacked traders and shop owners at the Zebilla Market, according to eyewitnesses.

The armed robbers fired several rounds of bullets to scare people off the market so they could steal from the shops and monies from people who had come to the market to trade.

While the stealing was ongoing, an eyewitness said one stood by the roadside and fired continuously to ward off people from coming close.

In the course of the shooting, a form 2 student of the Hariya Junior High School, Musah Hassan, got hit by a bullet which killed him.

A “Mahama Can do” rider also got hit by a bullet in the arm through the windscreen. One Alhassan Bukari, a worker of a Brazilian construction firm, Quieroz Galvao Limited got hit by a stray bullet in his right leg while working opposite the robbery scene. The two are responding to treatment.

Some angry residents of Zebilla have accused police in Zebilla of not coming to the scene early to stop the armed robbers from shooting for close to one hour. They said they believe the police personnel were afraid of the robbers.

In their view, aside from fear, they do not see what would keep the police away for almost an hour, when the incident was just about 200 meters away from them. They say this is not the first time the market has been attacked by armed robbers and police have failed to stop the stealing.

“They always finish and go before the police comes. I am sure they were afraid of the robbers, if not what else will keep them away for that long time.” An angry resident said.

Meanwhile the Upper East Regional Police PRO, ASP David Okyere-Fianko has hinted that the police in Zebilla have arrested two persons believed to be linked to the Monday afternoon armed robbery at the Zebilla Market.

He has assured that police will intensify patrols in the district and other districts and municipalities in the region to flush out all criminals, so as to make the region a safe place to stay.
