Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu has hinted that the Regional Security Council is preparing a strategy that will deal with criminals operating in the region ruthlessly.

According to him, he has met the new Upper East Regional Police Commander and other security agencies and they are all coming together to pursue the criminals that are terrorizing the region.

He said he is not happy because the activities of armed robbers and motorbike snatchers are giving the Upper East Region a bad name and scaring investors away from the region, especially the areas where the robberies occur frequently.

The Regional Minister has therefore called on traditional authorities in the region to mobilize their people to form community watchdog volunteers to assist the police to fight the armed robbers.

Mr. Yakubu was speaking in Naga Traditional Area in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality when he visited the Chief of Naga, Naba Bosingo Olando A. Awuni III, at his palace.

“Let us face the fact, the police alone cannot be everywhere at the same time. These robbers take advantage of the absence of police to operate. If we agree to support the police, the robbery and other crimes in the region will reduce drastically because we as community watchdog groups will be in every community.” The Minister said.

Naba Bosingo Olando A. Awuni III on his part asked that a police station that has been under construction should be completed quickly and get police officers transferred to the Naga Traditional Area, to train members of the community watchdog that he intends to form to support the work of the police.

He commended the government for the investment it is making on the Naga Navrongo and Naga Bolgatanga roads, which he said will open up the area to investors and more people to settle.

He was happy with the investment in the educational sector too and asked that more efforts should be directed into the rural electrification projects in the area.
