Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga, has said Easter is a reminder to Christians and all people over the world to make conscious effort to protect the life God has given to humankind.
He said life was the greatest gift God had blessed man with, both spiritual and physical and it was imperative to avoid activities that would put that life at risk because it was given to man in trust and needed to be protected.
Speaking in a sermon to mark the celebration of Easter at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Bolgatanga, Most Rev Agyenta noted that the culture of sin, death and indiscipline was posing serious threat to that gift of life and Christians needed to address challenges that confronted it.
“Brothers and sisters, our God is a God of life and He has given us this life to be more like Him and so if we are celebrating Easter, we are celebrating the word of life and that life has many forms and ramifications, that is, the Christian life but the physical life that has been given to us, we are called to protect, promote and ensure that life is not at risk,” he added.
Bishop Agyenta said Easter presented a new life for Christians to be in union with Jesus Christ and the lack of love, forgiveness and charity were blocks that needed to be removed in order to protect the physical life and receive the blessings of the new life.
Most Rev Agyenta noted that there were so many ways one could protect the physical life and explained that in the era of coronavirus pandemic, the only thing one could do was to protect himself or herself in order to protect others.
“COVID-19 pandemic is a threat to ourselves and if we cherish this our life, we cannot and we should not play with it and that is why we continue to say that the very good thing you can do to yourself and your neighbour is to protect yourself, and so we are called to observe all the protocols and when we have the opportunity to take the vaccine, let us embrace it,” he said.
Bishop Agyenta indicated that God is His own wisdom had protected mankind since creation and urged the congregants to demystify the misconception surrounding the vaccine and patronize it.
On abortion, he said it was against the responsibility God had given to man to protect life and therefore called on the people to desist from the act and encourage those who had gone through it to go for confession and be cleansed.
Most Rev Agyenta further noted that environmental cleanliness was another way one could protect the gift of life and called on Christians to engage in activities that did not pose threat to others.
