Residents of Bamanho in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region are appealing to authorities to support the community with refuse containers to enable them to keep their environment clean as the insanitary condition could become worse as the rainy season approaches.

Residents of the community made the call when a level 300 student of the S. D. Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) Priscila Khadi Vawurah organized a clean-up exercise as part of activities marking her birthday.

The clean-up exercise which was a collaborative effort between the social development Student Priscila Khadi Vawurah and Zoomlion Ghana at Bamanho saw students and residents swept and picked rubbish from gutters and on the streets.

Miss Khadi Vawurah said the clean-up exercise was part of phase two of her birthday project to give back to society with phase one been a girl child education campaign and presentation of assorted items to selected schools within the community.

In an interview with A1 News after the clean-up exercise, Priscila Khadi observed, the poor sanitation situation poses a serious health threat to the people in the community especially those residing close to the refuse dumps.

Miss Vawurah said, her inspiration is to contribute to the wellbeing of the community, though she is not from Bamanho but by virtue of migration and education she is now a member of the community as such through her facilitation, the community now have one refuse container.

According to her, the motivation is to make an impact in the life of residents of the community since70 to 80 percent of students of S. D. Dombo University live in Bamanho and she believes that since they stay in the community it’s their responsibility to help keep the community clean.

Team Leader for Zoomlion Ghana at Bamanho, Wuzotoh Osman, commended Miss Khadi Vawurah for the initiative and urge people to emulate her kind gesture.

A resident who participated in the clean-up exercise, Paul Kombe urged residents to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal so as to help maintain a clean surrounding.

He called on duty bearers to help relocate the dumping site since the current site is in the middle of the community thereby posing a health threat to the people.

Miss Vawurah appealed to authorities to provide more containers for the people so as to deal with the sanitation challenge of the community.

With a population of more than one thousand the community has no refuse bins at advantage points for refuse collection until the Social Development Student Priscila Khadi who is also Presidential Aspirant of SRC for UBIDS, has provided the community with a refuse bin.
