UWR: MP pledges support for Birifoh SHS, as fire razed down girls’ dorm

The Member of Parliament for Lawra Constituency Lawyer Bede Ziedeng has pledged support to the Birifoh Senior High School as the fire burnt down the girls’ dormitory of the school last Friday.

The MP paid a visit to the school to inspect the affected dormitory block, interact with teachers, and students to find at first hand the extent of damage and the way forward.

Lawyer Ziedeng pledged to collaborate with the Acting Municipal Chief Executive Martin Bomba-ire and National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to provide the necessary relief support to the victims.

He urged the students to stay calm as they are assured of the necessary support in these are difficult times. 

The acting Headmaster of the school Adams Iddrisu in an interview with A1 Radio at the sideline of the MP’s said NADMO and the MCE have visited the school to assess the level of destruction and promised to provide them with the necessary support.

He indicated that because of psychological trauma, the affected students have been asked to go home for one week.

Mr Iddrisu urged the authority to ensure that support comes in time because the final year students will be returning to school soon and accommodation will be a big challenge for them.

Senior Girls Perfect (GP) of the school, Iddrissu Hajeri lamented over the damage of the fire and asked for immediate support such as learning materials from the MP and the public.

The girls’ prefect appealed for fans to be installed in the overcrowded rooms for enough ventilation.

The fire which burnt the girls’ dormitory of the school started on Friday, April 23, 2021, around 8:30 am.

The fire burnt four rooms of the girls’ dormitory and destroyed study materials, mattresses and personal belongings of about 60 students including form one students who have just reported to the school for the first time.

Meanwhile, the school already has infrastructure challenges such as inadequate dormitories and teacher’s quarters with more than half of the students staying outside campus.

The cause of the fire outbreak is yet to be determined by the Ghana National Fire Service.
