The Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has described the claims that suggest there is a culture of silence in the country as untrue.

Some critics including Sam Jonah, a Senior Citizen, and Investigative Journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni have decried that the era of culture of silence has returned under the Akufo-Addo led government.

But in response, the Information Minister who doubles the Member of Parliament for the Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency in the Eastern Region said such claims cannot be true because the current administration under President Akufo-Addo is doing its best to ensure that Ghanaians satisfy their constitutional mandate.

“When you hear some persons make comments that seeks to undermine what we all enjoy. They claim that there is a culture of silence in this country, we can’t corporate in this country, etc. We all know that, that cannot be the truth.”

The minister said this on Thursday when he had an encounter with some selected journalists in Bolgatanga as part of his working visit to the Upper East Region. The minister reiterates the government’s commitment to maintaining the freedom of expression of the Ghanaian media and the citizenry.

He used the occasion to commend the media in the region and the country as a whole for the sacrificial job they played in maintaining peace in the country.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah urged the media to constantly sensitize the public on the COVID-19 safety measures to stem the spread of the virus.
