Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Lawyer Abraham Amaliba has said that he is with great disappointment that regardless of the in-depth knowledge that the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) has, he still makes such unfortunate comments about the NDC.
According to Lawyer Amaliba, the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Bossman Eric Asare in an interview a week ago, said that the NDC was a danger to the Ghanaian democracy and that the EC did no wrong at the just ended 2020 elections.
The comment, Lawyer Amaliba noted was uncalled for and a breed of mistrust amongst the two parties, and he must apologize for making such statements.
In an interview on Day Break Upper East show on A1 Radio, Lawyer Amaliba said apologizing will go a long way to gain the NDC trust in the processes of the electoral management body.
He said “Bossman Asare said NDC is a danger to our democracy. He was interviewed on one media house and I was expecting the lady who interviewed him to ask why he was saying that, but the lady allowed him to go free. Why did he refer to the NDC as a danger to our democracy; is that the way we want to build this country?”
Lawyer Amaliba said Bossman Asare must apologize to the NDC which nobody is saying or forcing him to do but fundamentally, those who are there helping to run the affairs of the EC are not handling the electoral management body to the glory of this country.
He stressed that one of the reasons his party failed to honor the calls made by the Electoral Commission for its Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting was based on some of the utterances usually made by Bossman Asare.
The way forward for the two parties, Lawyer Amaliba explained would be, when the EC ensures that it brings back IPAC where it will be a deliberative body for all parties to be present.
He said “The EC should ensure that it brings back IPAC where it will be a deliberative body for all parties to be present …where for instance, if there’s going to be a CI to be laid in Parliament like those days where the smaller parties were given the chance to bring their representatives to meet with the EC to draw up the CI. But today, nothing of a sort is working; that’s why you saw on 4 or 3 occasions the EC’s CI were thrown out because they were sitting in their rooms doing what they think is best for all. Until they come out to understand and appreciate all political parties in this country, NDC will continue to undermine some of their meetings.”
