Youth not interested in hoe, cutlass agriculture – MOFA Director

Upper East Regional Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Francis Ennor has stated that the youth are no longer interested in the old method of using hoe and cutlass to farm.

The MOFA director is of the opinion that, the only way to attract the youth into agriculture is to move away from the traditional way of farming and rather adopt more modernize methods of farming.

Mr. Ennor was speaking on A1 Radio’s news and current affairs analysis programme Reporters’ Visit said farming that applies latest technology such as green house farming shows that the youth are more interested in such kind of farming than the traditional methods.

Mr. Ennor was speaking on the backdrop of a research finding by Child Rights International that shows that a lot of young people are not interested in agriculture as a sustainable livelihood activity.

He said, government is already working on modernizing agriculture to meet the changing demands as well as to attract more youth to see agriculture as a productive venture to go into.

Mr. Ennor was hopeful that agriculture will receive much attention from government and stakeholders since covid – 19 pandemic has taught the nation that agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the country and that we can not survive without eating.
