UE/R: Our focus now is to prevent crime – Police

Upper East Regional Police command has shifted more of its’ attention to the prevention of crime rather than arresting and prosecuting suspects.

Upper East Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Police Service, ASP David Fianko-Okyere said, the focus of the police service in the region is now to prevent crime rather than arresting and prosecuting suspects when the crime has been committed.

Speaking in an interview on Day Break Upper East show on A1 Radio, the PRO said in order to achieve this target, the police service in the region has set up an emergency response team that will act swiftly when they receive information about an impending crime that is about to be committed in the region.

He assured residents of the Upper East Region of a robust police response to fighting crime in the region thus the need for the public to volunteer information that will help in crime fight.

Commenting on the arrest of the suspected gang leader who tried snatching a motorbike from its’ owner at gun point around the OA Travel and Tour area, ASP Fianko-Okyere said the suspect when pursued by the police team fired at the personnel which prompted a return fire by the police team injuring him in both legs.

He said the suspect is currently responding to treatment at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital while the necessary process will be put in place to arraign him before court.

ASP Fianko-Okyere appealed to the general public continue to collaborate with the police service in fighting crime through information sharing.
