In its bid to ensure that all persons get counted within the extended period for the 2021 Population and Housing Census, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) in the Upper West Region has established a call center.

The Upper West Regional Statistician, Sixtus Dery has told A1 Radio in Wa that just hours after setting up the call center, the Service received calls drawing their attention to persons who had not yet been counted.

He said, “So far we have received 3 calls already today. The areas they said they have not been counted are areas we are still working in. Currently we have people still working in the Bamahu area, we have people working around the Nakore area and the area around the regional hospital. These are places with new developments”.

According to him, the GSS may not need up to July 18, the extended date for the 2021 Population and Housing Census, to finish enumerating persons resident in the Upper West Region.

Mr Dery observed that the exercise rests at about 94 percent complete.

He explained that Wa Municipal, being a cosmopolitan area, poses the biggest challenge. He disclosed that per the last update, on July 11, 2021, enumeration of the area stood at 86 percent, the lowest recorded in the region. The Regional Statistician mentioned that the Nadowli-Kaleo District had enumerated about 98 percent of the households in the area.

“In the Upper West Region, we have not also brought enumeration to a conclusion yet. We are currently around 94 percent. We may not even need up to July 18. As it stands now, Wa Municipal is the lowest in the region. They are making around 86 percent,” he said.

Mr Dery called for continuous support as the 2021 Population and Housing Census exercise enters the final phase.
