A gender advocate, Janet Asana Nabla is advocating for the state to pay back the allowances of the first and the second lady.

First lady, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo and the second lady, Mrs. Samira Bawumia who after a public backlash refunded allowances paid to them since 2017, also rejected a proposal by the Ntiamoa-Baidu committee for them to be kept on a monthly salary.

But speaking in an exclusive interview to A1 News, Mrs. Asana who is the General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC) while describing the decision taken by the first and second ladies as unfortunate, stated the two women are entitled to the allowances they received.
Considering the significant role the women play in the development of the country, Mrs. Asana said the state should not have accepted the refund bearing in mind the bad image the country may suffer due to the action.

“I feel sad that our first and second ladies have to paid money that they are entitled to, back to the state because of public backlash why are we doing this? And we says, we want the country to be developed, people don’t know that women plays a very important roles when it comes to the development of the country? it is very sad I must say.

And for me I still hold the view that, the state should not accept the allowances they paid back and leaders of this country particularly the council of leaders must go ahead and apologize to our first and second ladies not only the current ones but all the previous ladies for the unnecessary public backlash that they have received” she stated.

She further noted that, if authorities fail to address the issue amicably, by regulating salary for first and second ladies it will have a potentials of increasing corruption in the country.
