The Upper East regional branch of retired nurses and midwives club has celebrated it’s 10 years of existence in Bolgatanga, under the theme “Ten years of togetherness, achievements and the way forward.”

Addressing participants at the ceremony, a founding member of the club Mrs. Mary Ann Mmiayam Ako, spoke about how the Upper East Regional branch of the club was formed in the region, and some of the successes they have achieved over the past ten years.

“In May 2011, I (Mrs. Mary Ann Mmiayam Ako) accompanied my sister in-law to a monthly meeting of retired Community Development Officers at the Women’s Training Center. I was invited by my sister in-law to attend and thereafter socialize with them. From then I started hatching the idea of replicating it within the nursing and midwifery fraternity.

I then decided to share the idea with a colleague, Adam Mary Adekurah, former Matron of the Bolgatanga hospital. At the time both of us were teaching at the Bolgatanga Nursing Training College on contract. And she agreed that it was a good idea and that it was something worth trying” she explained.

Mrs. Ann Mmiayam also took the opportunity to highlight some of the challenges the club is facing which she urge members to stand on their grounds in order to over come them.

She said, “Just like every association, the club also has challenges, the main challenges is funding for the club, even though members contribute monthly, this is insufficient. And also attendance of meetings is poor as well as payment of dues, all this I believe together we can address them as we expected”

The Upper East Regional Nursing and Midwifery Officer Bernard Anankor, who represented the Regional Director of Health at the anniversary congratulated members of the club for been together for the past ten years.

He also assured them of the continuous support of the health directorate.

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of Retired Nurses and Midwives Club in the Upper East Region, Mrs. Margaret Tabilba said the club has it members across all over the region hence the club is open to all retired nurses and midwives to join.
