Residents in parts of the Upper West Region have been left stranded as parts of roads and bridges connecting communities have been washed off by torrential rainfalls in the region.

The rain which began in the early hours of Friday, 13th August and lasted for about 7 hours destroyed several farms as well.

Reports trickling in indicate that the Nadowli/Kaleo District may be the worse affected area.

The exact extend of damage by the flood waters is being assessed by a team of officials from the National Disaster Management Organistion (NADMO) led by the Regional Director Mustapha Ahmed and the Regional Manager for the Ghana Red Cross Society Jeremiah Kwaku Afako.

Speaking with A1 Radio, Mr Afako indicated that what they have gathered so far show the damage may be only farmlands, bridges and roads.

The Member of Parliament for the Nadowli Kaleo Robert Anthony Sumah Constituency in a statement cautioned motorists to be wary of the destructions on the roads and advise themselves according by finding alternative routes.

In the statement, he mentioned that the Kululu bridge at Goriyiri had collapsed.

The Nadowli-Babile Road was unmotorable due to the collapse of the Bridge at Yiziri Bakpeng. He disclosed that there was initially a hold up earlier in the day at some point between Dapopari and Baazu, due to overflow of a Bridge on the Nadowli – Jirapa Road but that stretch is currently motorable.

He said he was in touch with the Authorities to quickly address the problems.

“I have forthwith communicated with the Ghana Highways Authority and indications are that immediate steps would be taken to ensure that vehicular traffic through the District Resumes on the stretches above as soon as possible,” he said.

” I am in constant talks with the relevant Authorities to find a way forward. In the meantime, those living in low lying areas are to stay alert and/or move to higher grounds,” he continued to say.

Reports from a number of communities reaching A1 Radio also indicate that numerous feeder roads within the Nadowli/Kaleo District have also been cut off, significantly affecting movement between communities in the District.

Due to the current state of the roads, it some passengers say they have had to pay more than double the price to be able to move from Wa to other Districts like Lawra and Jirapa. This is because the shortest route through Nadowli is unmotorable.

A number of dams also overflowed their dams affecting residents and commuters. The Kulipieni Dam is one such dam. The situation has left residents of Kulipieni and Nanvili stranded.
